All participants are social workers whose daily tasks involve considerations regarding custody of children. The theoretical framework used in this essay was guided by the concepts of discretion, power, categorizing and roles. The findings were that the social workers consider very similar aspects in their arguing about whether the custody should be transferred or not, regardless their place of work, but differ in how they prioritize the different aspects of the specific case, for example to what extent the biological parents’ opinion should matter or how to decide the children’s best. One significant finding was that the child’s opinion was said to be very important but in the end the social worker often used her position to decide what’s best for the child. (Less)
