[The aim of this qualitative study was to examine social workers experiences of their work with domestic violence. This was performed by taking part of the social workers narratives about their work through semi - structured interviews. The social workers were employed at governmental organisations in Skania, Sweden. We found that attitudes and standards among the social workers have crucial impact on the support received by victims of domestic violence. These norms and standards lays within two general understandings called relational and structural perspectives which affects the work throughout. These perspectives are also social constructions which determine how the domestic violence and its victims are understood. How these constructions is formed also have an impact on what support is offered to the help seeking. This support is limited to interventions of relational character such as safe houses which is excluding for socially constructed by the social workers as non ideal clients. Preventive interventions on structural levels are few close to non existing but highly recommended in the narratives by the social workers. A combination of the two general understandings is desirable in working with domestic violence as a way to include all types of victims and also to bring attention to the structural problem of men’s violence against women.]
Key words: social workers, domestic violence, narratives, social constructions, intersectionality (Less)
