- Abstract
- This essay provides an explanation of how the legal aspects of firearm amnesties are carried out in Sweden. Furthermore how they are designed and what results they have produced. The purpose of our paper is to create an understanding of the firearm amnesties conducted in Sweden and to investigate whether there is a consensual basis for the implementation of this measure, and how this should be justified. In order to do this, we have conducted a qualitative content analysis of the laws that led to the firearm amnesties, as well as the final reports issued by rikspolisstyrelsen. With this in combination with a survey of the common attitudes towards firearms amnesties from a legal philosophy perspective, we have created an explanatory map of... (More)

In order to do this, we have conducted a qualitative content analysis of the laws that led to the firearm amnesties, as well as the final reports issued by rikspolisstyrelsen. With this in combination with a survey of the common attitudes towards firearms amnesties from a legal philosophy perspective, we have created an explanatory map of the legal and justice principles of firearm amnesties. Our results are presented in the analysis using a modified model of Matthias Baier's model of normativity to demonstrate the relation to the sociology of law. We found that the effectiveness of an amnesty is often based on how well the information campaign is able to inform the public. We also found interesting legal philosophical tendencies of the respondents to our survey. For example, our respondents does not consider amnesties to be effective nor justified. The majority of our respondents are negative to the implementation of amnesties despite the fact that they largely fulfil their purpose. (Less)
