Abstract
The aim of this study was to examine how the employees at a needle and syringe exchange program understand motivation in their patients and how they work with them to motivate care, treatment and changed habits of addiction. Furthermore, the study is also exploring how the employees are working on establishing a relationship with patients and what role that relationship plays in the process of change. The method chosen for this study was qualitative semi-structured interviews with employees at a needle and syringe exchange program in Sweden. Furthermore, the study is also exploring how the employees are working on establishing a relationship with patients and what role that relationship plays in the process of change. The method chosen for this study was qualitative semi-structured interviews with employees at a needle and syringe exchange program in Sweden. We found that the relationship between the employees and patient is highly valuable
for the motivational work and change. The employees described ten elements to create this motivational relationship: The role of the professional, how you treat the patient, understanding, individualized care, continuity, humanity, honesty, authenticity, warmth and trust. According to the staff, an important condition for successful motivational work is allowing the patient to be in control and able to influence the situation. Partnership and cooperation is preferred rather than for the employee to be the expert. Making the situation
manageable for the patient is also valued for the motivational work, as well as working with empowerment. Other elements that need to influence the motivational work are flexibility, patience and unconditional positive regard of the human being. It is also believed that for some patients motivation needs to be created in a turning point of life and that motivation is just temporary. (Less)
