(2017) PSYK11 20171Department of Psychology
- Abstract (Swedish)
Samma upplevelse... (More)

(Less)
- Abstract
- In this study the relationship between internalized stigma and discrimination experiences among former criminals in Sweden was examined, as well as the relationship between their discrimination experiences and recidivism rate. The purpose was to achieve a better understanding of society’s role in former criminals’ reintegration process. The participants completed a survey where they self-assessed their degree of self-stigma, discrimination experiences and number of incarcerations. The number of participants was 23 people whom had all been incarcerated at least once. The results showed a significant correlation between internalized stigma and the experience of others thinking they can’t achieve much in life due to their criminal record. The... (More)

The number of participants was 23 people whom had all been incarcerated at least once. The results showed a significant correlation between internalized stigma and the experience of others thinking they can’t achieve much in life due to their criminal record. The same experience also showed a significant correlation with the recidivism rate in the past five years. Despite these findings one ought to be cautious drawing confident conclusions based on our results. As this is the first study in Sweden examining these certain relationships, there is an extensive need for further research within this area. (Less)
