Each party reason for their view; the Moderate party (sw. Moderaterna) and the Swedish Democrats (sw. Sverigedemokraterna) argue that each individual is responsible for its own will, make their own choices and therefore must face the consequences that follow. Both want to implement tougher and longer sentences yet at different degrees that will deter the individual and society from committing crimes and both parties agree with each other that the justice system is too cautious. The Social Democrats (sw. Socialdemokraterna) however debate that criminals has fallen victim for the inequalities and injustices present in society and therefore, it is society that must take responsibility to ensure availability of resources such as care and rehabilitation for criminals to help them change path. With the right guidance and help all people want to break free from a life of crime they argue.
The Social Democrats stand in contrast to the Swedish Democrats and the Moderate party that has been influenced by the right populism. (Less)
