Throughout the literature review, it appears that the internet has an enhancing role in the downloading of abusive images of children. Michel Foucault’s control theory can explain this, through the anonymity and absence of surveillance of the internet administers. Moreover, individuals’ sexual preferences get an arena through the internet, including deviant sexual preferences. Henceforth, the review found the origin to the downloading of child pornography, which were deficits in the regulation of emotion and accessibility, anonymity and affordability associated with the virtual space. The review found several possible enhancing risk factors associated with child pornography crimes, including a sexual interest in children, cognitive distortions concerning children as sexual objects and intimacy problems. Even though individuals downloading and distributing child pornography showed a greater functionality, with less cognitive distortions, there were found to be several similarities among internet-offenders and contact-offenders. Users of abusive images of children are described as a heterogeneous group with diverse typologies. It seems as if the internet has a major role in the lawbreaking behavior. (Less)
