- Children who grow up with a parent with an addiction and/or mental illness are at higher risk of developing the same disorder. There are children who even when growing up under rough conditions succeed to overcome their childhood and grow up to be “normal” citizens. These children have a high level of resilience and are usually referred to as Superkids. The aim of this study was to understand what factors can be important to raise a child’s resilience, by reading autobiographies by self-declared Superkids. There are children who even when growing up under rough conditions succeed to overcome their childhood and grow up to be “normal” citizens. These children have a high level of resilience and are usually referred to as Superkids. I formulated five relevant categories to present the result: Social support, spirituality, creativity, turning points and contact with social services. The result showed both similarities and differences in the authors’ stories. They all have had social support, from a friend, step-parent or a professional. The authors all have had a notable meeting with social services and the majority expressed a negative view on that meeting. Although the meeting with social services was not portrayed in a positive way, three of the authors described a good contact with someone working with social work. (Less)
