(2017) PPTP06 20151Department of Psychology
- Abstract (Swedish)
(Less)
- Abstract
- The aim of this qualitative study is to investigate aspects of trauma from a patients point of view, who have post traumatic stress disorder or depression, in order to get a better understanding about trauma as a phenomena. The overall conclusion is that trauma is described as a specific phenomena, that is an event that is not part of normal life and which includes aspects of the persons reaction to the event and also including longstanding consequences, affecting the inner sense of self. The specific nature of the event has an importance, but is not always consistent with the diagnostic criterion for PTSD according to DSM V. Psychological mechanisms that seem to be involved in what is experienced as traumas are, emotional regulation,... (More)

Psychological mechanisms that seem to be involved in what is experienced as traumas are, emotional regulation, coping or defense mechanisms, unconscious processes, how the person relates and integrates trauma with their previous comprehension of self and the world and how trauma relates to attachment qualities in early relationships. The results are discussed in relation to contemporary trauma theories and implications for treatment. A hypothesis is that trauma-treatment could be beneficial for other patients than just those with clearly defined PTSD. (Less)
