- Abstract
- The aim with this bachelor thesis is to to create an understanding for how people who primary do not define themselves as men experience the community in digital networks that is separatist for them, as well as examine what significance separatism has for people's perceived sense of community. The informants’ experiences of being a part of digital feminist communities that are free from men, are analyzed with theories concerning Web 2.0, network communities, collective intelligence and intersectional feminism. - The aim with this bachelor thesis is to to create an understanding for how people who primary do not define themselves as men experience the community in digital networks that is separatist for them, as well as examine what significance separatism has for people's perceived sense of community. The informants’ experiences of being a part of digital feminist communities that are free from men, are analyzed with theories concerning Web 2.0, network communities, collective intelligence and intersectional feminism. The bachelor thesis is based on three in depth, qualitative interviews with members from the Swedish Facebook groups Växtgäris and Beauty and Bullshit. The informants saw a need to have a space where male gaze was not represented, where they could feel safe and where they did not have to cater to men. Furthermore, Växtgäris and Beauty and Bullshit provided the informants with a room where they did not have to defend their feministic values and actions. The informants meant that people’s differences became less visible in digital spaces, than in physical. The informants were convinced that it would not exist a close sense of community if men also were members, and that the intersectional perspective made the Facebook groups’ members more tolerant towards people that do not belong to the norm, like transgender people and people that are racialized. The informants felt a mutual exchange of knowledge and experiences in the groups, and in Växtgäris they even exchanged plant cuttings. The informants meant that their consumption patterns had changed since they joined the groups, in the sense that they had begun consuming more of what the groups concern. (Less)
