The main purpose of this study was to investigate what thoughts school counselors have about the reasons for mental illness among adolescents and furthermore in which way they can work with them. A subsidiary aim was to explore the experience of the school counselors in mental illness among adolescents in relation to gender, ethnicity, sexuality and socio economical status. The study was conducted by six qualitative interviews, three with school counselors that work in junior high schools and three with school counselors at the high schools. An ecological system theory, Bronfenbrenner (1979) and the theoretical concept, discretion, from the street - level bureaucracy theory, Lipsky (2010) were sources used for the analysis in this study. The result shows that the school counselors express many different reasons for mental illness among adolescents depending on the specific individual and its environment. However the result also indicate how there can be a pattern of what causes mental illness after gender, ethnicity, sexuality and socio economical status. Furthermore the result shows that the school counselors have a wide discretion and can work with adolescents in multiple ways. However the school counselors emphasize that they are not working with the main treatment of adolescents who have mental illness, instead they can be a social support and a link between various help resource in the community. The result also indicate that gender, ethnicity, sexuality and socio economical status isn’t relevant for the school counselors work in an individual level, instead it can be worthful in the preventive work to discover potential risk groups.
