- Abstract
- Terra sigillata is a roman pottery type that was primarily produced in western Europe during the period between first century and fourth century AD. This pottery, as well as other objects imported from the Roman Empire, can perhaps show trading routes between societies in Scandinavia and societies in Europe. Accordingly the aim of this essay is to distinguish possible trading routes that have been used between societies in Scandinavia and in Europe. For the purpose of discussing possible trading routes, this essay also includes research of the terra sigillata findings in Scandinavia.

(More) - Terra sigillata is a roman pottery type that was primarily produced in western Europe during the period between first century and fourth century AD.
Research about these findings in Scandinavia has been carried out through archaeological databases and databases that have made it possible to search in Scandinavian museum archives. Following the search through different kinds of databases, literature have been used in order to increase the reliability in the information from the databases, as well as achieving more detailed information about the findings. The Scandinavian terra sigillata material has been compared with the material primarily in northern Germany, but also partially the material in Poland. Northern Germany and Poland have been selected because of they being the former northern area of the roman, and so making the region between Scandinavia and the borders of the Roman Empire.
This research has shown that trading between the societies in Scandinavia and in Europe, as well as trading with the production sites and Scandinavia are both possible. Trading between societies in Poland and Scandinavia should also be included, even though the terra sigillata material in Poland is not as large as the material in the northern Germany. This research also shows the possibility of some kind of distribution of terra sigillata from larger to smaller settlements in Scandinavia. (Less)
