Abstract (Swedish)
Regionen uppfyller vissa kriterier i Montevideokonventionen, men situationen blev mer komplicerad när Spanien tillfälligt drog in deras... (More)

Regionen uppfyller vissa kriterier i Montevideokonventionen, men situationen blev mer komplicerad när Spanien tillfälligt drog in deras autonomi.
(Less)
Abstract
This bachelor thesis addresses the possibility Catalonia has to become an independent state. The Catalan declaration of Independence came shortly after the election of October 1, 2017, the reactions to the results differed in the world. The Spanish state declared the election illegal. The Spanish police tried to stop the election. The action was reprehensible, but not unexpected. Reactions awoke when several European leaders did not discard the actions of the Spanish state.
Discussions have since risen; can Catalonia become an independent state? This essay goes through the possibilities and analyzes if the region can be successful. The region fulfills certain criteria of the Montevideo Convention, but the situation became more complicated... (More)

Discussions have since risen; can Catalonia become an independent state? This essay goes through the possibilities and analyzes if the region can be successful. The region fulfills certain criteria of the Montevideo Convention, but the situation became more complicated when Spain temporarily suspended their autonomy. The question is when the criteria of the Montevideo Convention should be applied, should it have been before or after the election?
The region has its own history, which may be the reason for their national self-determination. Nevertheless, recognition from other states is the most important criteria in terms of the birth of a state. However, it seems that recognition of Catalonia is far away. There are many barriers for the recognition. The EU and Spain play important roles, which makes it hard to say what the future of the region will look like. (Less)
