Abstract
This paper examines how trust in national and European institutions, as surveyed in the
Eurobarometer, has been affected by the 2008 global financial crisis. By using a recently

especially visible for the European Commission and the European Parliament. This indicates that
the effect of a financial crisis is worrisome, but also that it is an effect that abates. Further
research is necessary to be able to understand why this is the case, and why this is less apparent
for national institutions and the European Central Bank. (Less)
