Abstract
Background As new product development is becoming more important due to higher
and more global competition the new product introduction process
needs to be efficient in order to launch new products before they
become obsolete. Therefore, a more efficient development process with
integrated functions is needed. Concurrent engineering claims to be this
and has support in much research. However, concurrent engineering is
not easy to implement and an accurate implementation is required in
order to reap the many benefits. Therefore, several tools such as HoQ,

integrated functions is needed. Concurrent engineering claims to be this

not easy to implement and an accurate implementation is required in
order to reap the many benefits. Therefore, several tools such as HoQ,
QFD and DFM are presented in order to ensure an efficient process
with the correct focus. Lastly, the front-loading approach and product
portfolio management are two supporting theories that naturally comes
from concurrent engineering and supports the importance of using
simultaneous functions in the process.
Purpose The purpose is to understand and map the actual processes of new
product development and production to fully grasp the interface
between them. This in order to develop and introduce a more
concurrent process with a more collaborative approach between
functions. This will result in an improvement of a company’s product
development by simply integrating its functions to work
simultaneously.
Delimitations This project will focus on the interface between new product
development and production, more specifically the new product
introduction process. Functions such as procurement, service and
maintenance will not be focused on.

Methodology This study has a triangular approach where interviews, observations and
archive analysis has been used to understand the company in detail.
This has given a deeper and holistic understanding which the author
used to draw pivotal conclusions.
Conclusions Seven areas of improvement and a suggested customized concurrent
process for new product introduction. The proposed production is
focused around production to be easier to implement and create an
impact faster.
Discussion The author discusses implications of the proposed change with a strong
emphasize on the importance of change management. Additionally,
further research possibilities such as Agile Project Management and
Advanced Product Quality Planning is presented and considered.
Moreover, further considerations are reviewed and a reasoning of the
advantages and disadvantages of being a first-mover instead of a
“follower” is held. Lastly, the author’s contribution to the case
company, academia and industry is examined. (Less)
