The Role of Psychological Flexibility in Premenstrual Syndrome and Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder: A Survey of Swedish women
(2017) PSPR14 20172Department of Psychology
- Abstract (Swedish)
Deltagarna genomförde en online-undersökning som innehöll standardiserade mått för premenstruella symtom och premenstruell relaterad nedsättning (The premenstrual symptoms screening tool), premenstruell coping/hantering (The premenstrual coping measure), psykologisk flexibilitet (Chronic Pain Acceptance Questionnaire and Committed Action Questionnaire), socialt stöd (The Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support), och livskvalitet (SF-12 Health Related Quality of Life).
(Less) - Abstract
- The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between premenstrual symptoms and impairment, premenstrual coping, psychological flexibility, social support, and quality of life (QoL) in a sample of Swedish women who suffer from Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) and/or Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD). This study seeks to address a gap in the literature where these relationships are under-investigated.
Three hundred and thirty-one participants were recruited through Facebook, within groups aimed to be supportive for sufferers of PMS/PMDD, and completed an online survey incorporating standardized measures of premenstrual symptoms and impairment (The premenstrual symptoms screening tool), premenstrual coping (The premenstrual coping... Three hundred and thirty-one participants were recruited through Facebook, within groups aimed to be supportive for sufferers of PMS/PMDD, and completed an online survey incorporating standardized measures of premenstrual symptoms and impairment (The premenstrual symptoms screening tool), premenstrual coping (The premenstrual coping measure), psychological flexibility (Chronic Pain Acceptance Questionnaire and Committed Action Questionnaire), social support (The Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support), and QoL (SF-12 Health Related Quality of Life). Correlation analysis and hierarchical multiple regressions were used to analyze the data.
Results suggested that psychological flexibility explains a significant however, relatively small part, of the variance in premenstrual-related impairment and QoL, after controlling for the severity of symptoms. Tentatively this suggests that psychological flexibility may act to ameliorate the effects of premenstrual symptoms on functioning and QoL and that interventions that target psychological flexibility may be of help to women with PMS and PMDD. On the contrary, premenstrual coping and perceived social support did not act in a similar fashion in the current study.
This study adds to a small body of literature in the area and further research is needed to confirm the results. (Less)
