Economic Discrepancy in East Asia Assessing East Asia’s Economic Diversity Through Manufacturing
(2018) EKHM51 20161Department of Economic History
- Abstract (Swedish)
- This paper analyzes the economic diversity among East Asian countries through the channel of
manufacturing industries. Using industrial data for the period 2002-2012, the presence of unconditional
convergence in manufacturing is detected, suggesting its significance to the industrial divergence among
these countries. The uneven manufacturing development can be explained using a version of the Heckscher-
Ohlin model, where high performing East Asian countries historically possess relative capital abundance
which allow them industrialize quicker than those that did not. The paper also dispels the notion that foreign
investment is significant for industrial development as it is unable to find any direct relationship between
them.
