Association between sensory function and medio-lateral knee motion during functional tasks in a healthy female population

Abstract
Background: A knee-medial-to foot position (KMFP) during functional tasks has been identified as a risk factor for Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) -injury among women. Among ACLinjured subjects, a reduced sensory and proprioceptive function has been correlated with a KMFP during functional tasks. The most reliable measure of proprioception seems to be the measuring of a subject’s Threshold to Detect Passive Motion (TDPM) in a joint. A subject’s vibration perception threshold (VPT) is a measure of sensory function.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the correlation between proprioception, vibration sense and a medial knee position during two functional tests in healthy subjects.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the correlation between proprioception, vibration sense and a medial knee position during two functional tests in healthy subjects.

Study design: Clinical study Materials and Method A group of 25 women between 18 and 40 years of age were included. The participants’ sensory function was measured with a Biothesiometer and a device developed
at Lund university for measuring kinesthesia. For the functional tests the participants were required to perform the stair descending and drop
jump tests. The knee position tests was determined through visual observation.
Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient was used to assess the correlation between sensory function and a KMFP. An independent T-test was used to evaluate differences in sensory function between subjects dichotomized into a group with either ‘good’ or ‘poor’ performance on the functional tasks.

Ethics: This study was performed within the scope of an ethical application to the Regional Ethical Review Board in Lund, Sweden (2015/581) All participants gave their written informed consent to participate in this study. All recordings of performed tests were seen by the authors only and deleted following the analysis.

Results: A KMFP during the second drop jump landing correlated with poor VPT scores at both the foot and the knee. Subjects dichotomized into the group with a poor KMFP score during the second drop jump landing had a significantly higher VPT score at the knee compared to those with a good score.

Conclusion: Our findings suggest a possible correlation between worse vibration sense and a KMFP during the second landing of the drop jump test. An increased understanding of vibration sense and its relation to KMFP might contribute to developing future injury screening methods. (Less)
