Abstract
By 2018, half of the workforce will consist of persons born around 1980. This large group of people is labeled Generation Y by several researchers and writers and many of these have made an effort to summarize what motivates this Young generation. This study has the same intention but with an untested group of employees in the Swedish armed forces. The author of this study has gathered several theories about generations and motivation and created a survey in an attempt to explain the motivators of Generation Y in the Swedish armed forces.

This study has the same intention but with an untested group of employees in the Swedish armed forces. The author of this study has gathered several theories about generations and motivation and created a survey in an attempt to explain the motivators of Generation Y in the Swedish armed forces.
The behavior or the motivator of a certain generation is impossible to generalize but there is a possibility to see patterns when looking to a group instead of individuals. This survey had a response rate of 81.5 % (n=163). The conclusion of the survey shows that Generation Y in the Swedish armed forces responds like others in several statements but there are some differences and mainly when it comes to recognition, praise, relations and work-life balance. According to known theories these characteristics should be important for Generation Y, compared to
other generations, but the survey shows that it isn’t. (Less)
