Abstract
This thesis examines the effects of gender representation in the swedish county councils with respect to investments in maternity and children healthcare. The econometrics tests provide ambiguous results regarding the relationship between the share of female council members and the amount of resources dedicated to maternity and children healthcare respectively. Pooled OLS yields a statistical significant correlation between the dependent variables and the primary independent variable. The coefficients are multiple times bigger than the standard deviation of the dependent variable. On the contrary, while controlling for any county specific effects (fixed or random) the majority of the correlation vanishes. The exception to this is... (More)
This thesis examines the effects of gender representation in the swedish county councils with respect to investments in maternity and children healthcare. The exception to this is regressions with Random Effects, with investments in maternity healthcare as the dependent variable. The results of a Hausman test appoint the Random Effects Model to be the most suitable model for estimating the relationship. In conclusion, pooled OLS and Random Effects Model provide evidence that a positive correlation exists between female representation and investments in maternity healthcare, while the Fixed Effects Model does not. The same holds for children healthcare except that the Random Effects Model neither provides any significant correlation with the primary independent variable. (Less)
