The gathering of the empirical material was done through four (4) semi structured interviews at two different treatment institutions. For the analysis of the material we chosed Brickman’s models of helping and coping, symbolic interactionism and a feminist perspective. The analysis showed that all respondents think that the patient does not have any responsibility for the origin of the problem due to addiction is a disease. Instead, the result showed that the responsibility is emerging during the treatment and that it is the patient’s own full responsibility to solve his or her own problems of addiction and misuse. The study also showed that when it comes to responsibility there is no gender difference, besides that women more often are victimized. However, for questions about the stereotype gender both institutions showed major gender differences. Addicted women were often portrayed and problemized and the men were given a more neutral role. These women were also described as shameful, vulnerable and manipulative. (Less)
