- Abstract
- Due to rapid urbanization and globalization in last decades, we face many serious problems. One of them is depopulation, a less discussed consequence of urbanization.
Besides depopulation, a town called Abertamy copes with its complicated history and lost relationship to the landscape. In my thesis, I was searching for potential answers to today’s burning question: How to boost life in the countryside in a sustainable way?

The town was founded in 1529 in the Ore Mountains in order to accommodate miners during the Silver Rush. The most prosperous period is dated to years 1900 - 1939. Unfortunately, an immense expulsion of citizens after WW2, and a communist era afterwards had been ruining the region for almost 50 years. Today’s public facility is insufficient and many buildings are in bad conditions. Tourism, thanks to a rich mining history and beautiful landscape, is the key potential for the future.
The project combines three strategies: public space interventions, municipal energy strategy and sustainable tourism. The concept is based on strengthening the community, because only the locals can reverse the bad prospects of the region and transform Abertamy into a self-confident prosperous town. (Less)
