- Abstract
- This thesis concentrates on the representation of Syrian refugee women in the Turkish media. The thesis uses a critical discourse analysis of texts produced by the mainstream print media, and reviews the theory of power in relation to gender and discourses. Furthermore, the thesis tries to undercover the role of media in portrayal of refugees and construction of the collective identity. From this point of view, Syrian refugee women represent a case that is worthy of analysis due to the intersection of power, gender, and ideologies. - This thesis concentrates on the representation of Syrian refugee women in the Turkish media. The thesis uses a critical discourse analysis of texts produced by the mainstream print media, and reviews the theory of power in relation to gender and discourses. Furthermore, the thesis tries to undercover the role of media in portrayal of refugees and construction of the collective identity. From this point of view, Syrian refugee women represent a case that is worthy of analysis due to the intersection of power, gender, and ideologies. The three most circulated newspapers, with various political orientations and ideologies, in Turkey were analyzed in order to demonstrate the main frames and perspectives on Syrian refugee women. These newspapers signify the predominant discourses and ideological diversities among various discourses. The findings indicate that in the Turkish mainstream media, the representation of the refugee women is lacking, and the existing depictions contribute to the messages that promote normative femininity and traditional interpretation of womanhood. The discursive power of the media reinforces the existing male domination and female subordination in Turkey within certain frames and reproduction of angles. (Less)
