Abstract (Swedish)
Abstract
As a consequence of the overall mediatization of society and politics, there has been a rise of populist communication during recent years. Earlier research has mostly fo-cused on populism's ideological positioning and the political or populist actor itself instead of populism as a communication strategy. Against this background, this study aims at identifying and increasing knowledge about how populist elements as well as political communication strategies express themselves in a digital contemporary context. A qualitative content analysis has been used as a method of studying Twitter posts from a Swedish politician. The results indicate that communication strategies in a negative spectrum are particularly prominent and are used in combination with each other in the context of populism. In the analysis, this is further dealt with as a negative political narrative, where simplification of complex issues and irony as an emergent communicative tool also has been identified as continuous themes. These strategies and themes, together with populism's identified elements, can be considered as supporting in creating the political narrative. This is further conceptualized in the discussion, in terms of whether populism needs certain com-munication strategies to exist as well as a potential transformation of democracy as we know it today.
