The study was based on 19 children’s books about grief available at Helsingborgs city library. The analyze was based on two different perspectives: one focusing on gender and gender roles and the other one focusing on coping strategies. As a conclusion we found that male and female characters in children’s books is easily detected and presented with gender specific attributes. There is a higher frequency with female main characters in the books but at the same time there is a higher frequency of male characters in total. We also found that coping strategies are frequently used in children’s books and that the variety of coping strategies found in the books is wide and there is a great amount of combinations regarding the coping strategies used. Of all the books in this study only a few had a different content than death as a reason for grief. We think there’s a need of moore children’s books with different perspectives on grief. Also more research about how children react when there is a divorce or sickness that causes grief for the child. (Less)
