- The aim of this study was to investigate what engages social workers working with social assistance and how this commitment is expressed in their everyday work. Furthermore, the focus of the study was to investigate whether conflict arises when commitment is practised in the context of organizational conditions and political structures in society. - The aim of this study was to investigate what engages social workers working with social assistance and how this commitment is expressed in their everyday work. Furthermore, the focus of the study was to investigate whether conflict arises when commitment is practised in the context of organizational conditions and political structures in society. Our target group consisted of five social workers who work with social assistance at various social services centres in Skåne. The analysis was based on Bank's studies on professional integrity as well as personal engagement and professional accountability. The most central sources of commitment found were commitment to the client, commitment to social change and commitment to work with social assistance. Common to all social workers was that clients who showed resistance spurred commitment. Another conclusion was that conflict arose when the social workers’ personal commitment was limited by political structures, whilst external and organizational factors both seemed to promote and interfere with their personal commitment. Through Banks studies we also raised the conflict between personal commitment and the new professional accountability that has emerged as a result of the rise of a neo-liberal paradigm in society.
