Abstract
Trap roads are a part of the Swedish railway facility and resembles the safest front- and side protection at speed above 160 km/h. When designing Trap roads, some regulations needs to be followed. As these, in some cases, may be contradictory towards each other, the planners become somewhat insecure. The purpose of the master thesis has thenceforth been to clarify for the planners, as well as to work out how the most optimal trap road is designed, by involving all technical areas within the railway. A qualitative analysis was chosen for the master thesis, as it was considered to reflect the purpose of the thesis in the best possible way. As these, in some cases, may be contradictory towards each other, the planners become somewhat insecure. The purpose of the master thesis has thenceforth been to clarify for the planners, as well as to work out how the most optimal trap road is designed, by involving all technical areas within the railway. A qualitative analysis was chosen for the master thesis, as it was considered to reflect the purpose of the thesis in the best possible way. Furthermore, eight people, with different area of expertise within the rail industry, was interviewed. This is order to receive a wider perspective of the subject, which in turn would result in a more credible conclusion. The literature study consisted of different discussion areas that were relevant to the forthcoming analysis. The study contained an account of essential data, and consisted of facts about the different technical areas within the railway. Interviewees’ results heavily varied. Where some considered that trap roads should not exist, others considered the design of trap roads to be out of their area of expertise. Other interviewees thought that the trap roads design should be affected by the environment, and that the trap roads therefore should adapt to the situation. All interviewees agreed about one thing. The regulations unclear and outdated texts. The result, in combination with the literature study, provided the basis for the forthcoming analysis. Since Trafikverkets regulations are not directions which should be followed, but rather must be followed, it is of the utmost importance that these are well formulated. The analysis treated areas such as: the trap roads components, the isolated joints placement, as well as investment and maintenance. The conclusion which can be made is that the regulations must be clarified and that the old component names should be removed. Furthermore should the trap road be fitted with a buffer stop on top of a 60E1 rail, with Pandrol Fastclip fastening as well as concrete sleepers. The trap roads are an essential part of the railroad, as Trafikverkets wishes to achieve Vision Zero. Therefore the trap roads should exist.
