Abstract (Swedish)
(Less)
Abstract
Human service representatives often handle multiple contradictory expectations and requests. This has been described in terms of being subjected to cross pressure and has been studied in different professions, such as nurses and teachers. The phenomenon is described to be stressful and affects the employee during his/her every-day professional life. The purpose of this study was to investigate experiences of cross pressure amongst clinical psychologists in order to gain an understanding of what influences them in their professional life. Five licensed psychologists working in child and adolescent psychiatry units in Region Skåne were interviewed. The study was made using thematic analysis. The following five themes were identified: control, role, cooperation, values and external demands and policies. These themes were deemed to affect the experience of cross pressure. We discuss how the phenomenon of cross pressure can be perceived both as an integral part of the profession, as well as a burden. The way our respondents perceived cross pressure may be based on different experiences of the five themes. Those who expressed negative experiences also accounted for a stressful cross pressure. The psychologists who described positive experiences of the themes however, framed cross pressure as an innate part of their profession. (Less)
