Abstract (Swedish)
With the growth of cities more issues relating to the environment, economy and health have emerged. The climate in the city affects how the city is structured and how the city space is used. In return the city also has an effect on the climate by modifying the regional climate conditions on a large scale. This has led to an increase in air temperature in the urban areas causing an urban heat island effect where the temperature in the city is higher than in the surrounding rural areas.

Mitigation tactics to counter the urban heat island have been developed by changing the thermal properties of the building materials, adding water bodies to the urban scene and by implementing vegetation into the urban environment in the form of parks,... (More)

Mitigation tactics to counter the urban heat island have been developed by changing the thermal properties of the building materials, adding water bodies to the urban scene and by implementing vegetation into the urban environment in the form of parks, lawn, trees and green roofs.

The aim of this study is to investigate whether green roofs have an impact on the urban heat island effect in Augustenborg, Malmö by mapping the existing green roofs using remote sensing Landsat 8 thermal infrared image and air temperature measurements from ground stations to estimate the order of magnitude of the heating potential of the green roofs in comparison to the other surface covers. As well as attempt to identify the urban heat island effect and the possible relationship it
may have with the green roof locations in the area. The main hypothesis for the present study is that green roofs have a cooling effect on the urban environment.

The surface temperature indicated a pattern with the different surface cover types and would indicate that the green roofs would impact the urban heat island in a cooling way. Through the order of magnitude estimations, the significance of the impact of the green roofs indicates that the impact of the different surface covers onthe urban heat island does not differ from each other and that the impact is so small that it does not affect a system this size. Popular Abstract
Growth of cities has caused the climate in them to change making urban areas warmer than the surrounding rural areas. This phenomenon is called an urban heat island. Mitigation tactics to counter the heating of the urban areas vary from changing the thermal properties of the surface materials to adding vegetation and water bodies to the urban scene. This study aims to investigate the impact green roofs have on the urban heat island effect using remote sensing and ground point data as well as to identify the urban heat island effect in Augustenborg, Malmö. The results indicate that the cooling impact the green roofs have on the urban heat island is minimal and does not differ notably from the other surface cover types in the study area.
