- Abstract
- E-bikes are getting increasingly more popular and often means a purchase of a brand new e-bike. But what if you could upgrade your already existing bike?
Kits that convert standard bycycles are nothing new to the market. However, many suffer from being to technical, making it hard to source the correct parts for the users specific bicycle and specific needs. Other kits are much more user friendly and easy to install but lacks performance.
The goal is to develop a unit that enables the user to convert any standard bicycle into an E-bicycle within ten minutes. The unit shall reflect the users behaviour in it's design and semantics and respect how and where the user might use the product.

After conducting interviews with bike manufacturers, electrical engineers, E-bike enthusiasts and end users, the design challenge started. From sketches to clay mock-ups to CNC milled pieces the product concept was finally ready.
Instead of working with a specific user in mind with external features like age and gender, a philosophy was instead created. To create a product for frequent bike users who want responsible independence.
The final concept has reduced the standard e-bike setup from seven parts down to four parts and includes a fast installation and easy operation. The battery is removable and makes it easy to charge indoors. The semantics of the unit makes it easy to incorporte in an interior setting and features furniture inspired details.
The end product is developed around the user and respects needs like performance, usability and semantics. (Less)
