The aim of this study was to examine what junior and intermediate level school teachers con-sider to be their responsibility in regards to actively paying attention to children who are vic-tims of domestic physical and/or psychological violence. The approach of the study was quali-tative with semi-structured interviews. Five junior and intermediate level school teachers from two different schools in Skåne County, Sweden, were interviewed. The teachers responded to questions such as if they are working to pay attention to children who are victims of domestic violence, if they have guidelines on how to do this work, how they think they could systemat-ically and regularly work on the matter, what signs they think indicate that a child is not feel-ing well because of the situation at home, how they think they can work as a support for these children who are victims of domestic violence, if they talk about violence with their pupils et cetera. Results from the study showed among other things that the teachers do not work with domestic violence as a given area in the teaching. Many of the teachers also reported that do-mestic violence was not a discussion in their education. All of the teachers pointed out that they are working with the pupil's mental health and that it is an area that is very important to them. Another result from the study was that the teachers pointed out that the relationship between teacher and a pupil is very important in order to pay attention to children that are not feeling well. The teachers got the opportunity to share how they think they can regularly work with paying attention to children who are victims of domestic violence. Many of the teachers considered it important that the discussion of violence is implemented in a concrete and facile way. The teachers also pointed out that the best approach is to incorporate it into the teaching already given. (Less)
