Sweden, a trend that is assumed to continue. With an electric bicycle, the ability to reach
a higher speed, and with greater acceleration, enhances compared to a traditional bike.
For the surrounding road users, these factors makes it difficult to determine speed and
risks which can lead to an increasing uncertainty and insecurity around bike paths. Since
the electric bicycles are a relatively new vehicle the research on electric bicycles are
limited as well as the methods for evaluating its safety. This thesis is about evaluating
the safety of electric bicycles. The main purpose of the study is to develop a method that
can be used for studying the behaviour of electric bicycles by using a video analyse. The
analyse involves statistics on gender, age, speed and the cars compliance to the
obligation to give way at bicycle crossing as well as reviewing the behaviour and
interactions between electric bicycles and cars. The study indicated that the electric
bicycles rode in a higher speed compared to the traditional ones. No significant
difference was to be noted regarding neither the amount nor severity of the interactions
for electrical assisted bicycles versus traditional bicycles. (Less)
