- Abstract
- Malmö is growing. By 2030 the north harbor will house a new neighborhood with the goal of bringing 3000 residents closer to the city center. Building vertically, roof top kindergartens and a large number of courtyards are some of the visions of the concept suggested by the architects. This new neighborhood and situation requires furniture accordingly and public furniture producer Nola wants to develop a solution for furnishing the new public spaces. This is where I came in.
The research on existing courtyards in Malmö and Lund showed attempts of creating dining areas inside the yards. But dull colors and uncomfortable park furniture results in the yards lacking of coziness. With the vision of making shared courtyards feel more as an... (More) - Malmö is growing. Building vertically, roof top kindergartens and a large number of courtyards are some of the visions of the concept suggested by the architects. This new neighborhood and situation requires furniture accordingly and public furniture producer Nola wants to develop a solution for furnishing the new public spaces. This is where I came in.
The research on existing courtyards in Malmö and Lund showed attempts of creating dining areas inside the yards. But dull colors and uncomfortable park furniture results in the yards lacking of coziness. With the vision of making shared courtyards feel more as an extension of the home than a public park, a courtyard kitchen sofa was developed with inspiration from Swedish folk kitchen sofas.
The result is a modern take on a classic piece of furniture with slim ribs in the backrest over a thick and sturdy wooden seat. The sturdy but airy construction of steel pipes and wire well resembles the ribs often found in wooden furniture. The backrest that rises 1 meter over the seat and comes around the corners to the sides gives an embracing feeling and helps the sofa create its own room. This gives a feeling of privacy and protection, like sitting with your back to a wall. The color chosen is rusty red, a warm red with hint of orange as a take on the classic color Faluröd commonly used in Swedish folk culture. (Less)
