Abstract
This paper aims to examine the roots of the Egyptian revolution of 2011, by tracing the vital variables for mobilization to flourish. This is made possible through the creation of a mobilization model based on the theoretical framework of Rational Choice and Collective Action, in combination with Charles Tilly’s writings on the subject. The model’s variables can then be examined in depth through a narrowing of the revolution to a timeline with clear rises and declines in mobilization. Thus, the paper’s purpose is to answer the hypothesis of why people choose to mobilize under certain circumstances and, furthermore, if there is an opportunity to generalize the result and be able to anticipate mass-political violence in the future. Thus, the paper’s purpose is to answer the hypothesis of why people choose to mobilize under certain circumstances and, furthermore, if there is an opportunity to generalize the result and be able to anticipate mass-political violence in the future. Based on the selected variables: Interest, Organization, Mobilization and Opportunity, the result indicates that there is correlation between the circumstances within these variables and the rise and decline in mobilization during the revolution. However, in light of a regressive development in religious coexistence in the country, and a return to nationalism globally, the possibility in predicting upcoming revolutions seems far-fetched.
