Abstract
Sweden may be on the verge on making a historical shift in defence policy. The current non-alignment doctrine is under threat after the Russian annexation of Crimea. The two leading parties, the Social Democrats and the Moderate Party, have different opinions whether or not Sweden should join forces with NATO. Therefore the purpose of this thesis is to examine both parties’ arguments in order to evaluate if their motivations are mainly influenced by realism or liberalism – two major theories of international affairs. By using a pro et contra analysis, arguments from leading representatives of both parties are examined and disclosed. The material analysed is a variation of policy documents, argumentative essays, debates and law proposals.... (More)

The material analysed is a variation of policy documents, argumentative essays, debates and law proposals. The thesis found that the arguments of the anti-NATO party, the Social Democrats, mainly had its basis in realism. Not wanting to disrupt the current power-balance in the region was the most common argument used. The thesis found that the arguments of the pro-NATO party, the Moderates, were mainly influenced by liberalism. The most common argument expressed were the need of inclusion in regard to NATO´s article five. (Less)
