Abstract (Swedish)

2013 beslutades att Fritidsbadet i Ystad
var i för dåligt skick för att fortsätta vara
badhus och kommunen valde därför
att permanent stänga badet. Samma
år utlystes en markanvisningstävling för
byggnaden med målsättning att hitta en
ny användning för Fritidsbadet som funnits
sedan 1961.

Förslaget som vann och började realiseras
2017 ville göra badet till ett hotell och
konferenscenter, vilket jag som Ystadbo
reagerade starkt på. Jag förundrades
över att en så viktig byggnad för stadens
historia skulle förvandlas till ännu en plats
för turister och inte för lokalbefolkningen.
Även den estetiska utformningen av
byggnaden tilltalade inte mig, därför
bestämde jag mig när det var dags att
göra examensarbete hösten 2018 att
jag ville göra ett eget förslag. Jag ville
göra ett förslag som jag tyckte gjorde
Fritidsbadet till rättvisa och som riktade sig
till lokalbefolkningen. Målet med projektet
var att skapa en plats som fortfarande
har fritid som tema, då kvarteret som
badet ligger i uppkom i samband med
Fritidsutställningen 1936.
Det resulterade i tre funktioner en scen,
en saluhall och ett växthus. Tillsammans
aktiverar dem byggnaden året runt,
skapar en knutpunkt för ungdomar och
unga vuxna i Ystad samt för in Österlens
matkultur i staden.

Genom att exponera den befintliga
strukturen och konstruktionen öppnas
byggnaden upp för att uppleva det
centrala rummet på flera nivåer och
i olika medium. Poolen fortsätter vara
hjärtat i verksamheten och de påtagliga
nivåskillnaderna i byggnaden förstärks
med sittgradänger. Två konstraserande
hörn med entréer skapas och aktiverar
områdes park. Den nya tillbyggnaden
underordnar sig den befintliga
byggnaden och är utformad för att
områdets alléer ska vara närvarande
även inne i byggnaden.

Abstract

2013 it was concluded that Fritidsbadet
in Ystad was in too bad condition to
continue to be a public bath and the
municipality decided to permanently
close it. The same year an architecture
completion was announced and the goal
was to find a new use for Fritidsbadet
that was built 1961. The winning proposal,
that started to become realized in 2017,
wants the bath to become a hotel, which
I as a local reacted strongly against. I
was surprised that such an important
building for the city’s history was going
to be transformed to a spot for tourism
rather than for the local population. Also
the esthetics of the new proposal didn’t
appeal to me. Therefore I decided to do
my own proposal when it was time to do
my master thesis in Autumn 2018. I wanted
to give justice to Fritidsbadet and create
something for the local population. The
goal with the project was to create a
place that still had “fritid” (spare time) as
the theme since the block was created
for the Fritidsutställnignen 1936. It resulted
in three functions a scene, a food market
and a green house that together activate
the building all year around and creates a
gathering point for young adults in Ystad
and that brings the food culture in to the
city.

By exposing the current structure and
construction the building is opening up
to discover the central space in different
levels and medium. The pool continues
to be the heart of the building and the
different levels in the building are getting
emphasized with tiered seating. Two
contrasting corners with entrances are
being created and activating the areas
park. The new extension is subordinated
the original building and are design to
make the tree avenues present inside of
the building.
