- Det är ofta arkitekter får frågan “Varför ritar ni så fula hus nuförtiden?”. Majoriteten lekmän tycks föredra estetiken hos äldre hus framför det som byggs idag. Ämnet är aktuellt i olika medier, men problemet är att det sällan bedrivs en konstruktiv diskussion mellan de två sidorna. Förespråkarna för en mer traditionell arkitektur smutskastar arkitekterna och arkitekterna hånar kritikerna. I mitt examensarbete vill jag därför försöka förstå vad som skiljer de båda grupperna åt och om det finns ett sätt att mötas i frågan. Med utgångspunkt i litteratur om klassisk arkitektur, matematik, naturvetenskap och miljöpsykologi har jag valt ut ett antal begrepp som jag tror kan fungera som ledord vid komposition av fasader. Begreppen beskriver faktorer som kan vara viktiga för att uppnå en, för allmänheten, tilltalande komposition och ligger till grund för ett urval exempelfasader. Fotografier av verkliga fasader kombinerat med intervjuer och semantiska bipolära skalor har utgjort en kvalitativ undersökning där både arkitekter och lekmän har deltagit. Undersökningen visade att det finns en viss typ av fasader som båda grupperna verkar uppskatta, vad som skiljer äldre fasaders komposition från modernistiska och att arkitekter generellt tycker bättre om modernistiska fasader än vad lekmännen gör. Egenskaperna som de mest uppskattade fasaderna har gemensamt skulle kunna ligga till grund för utformandet av nya fasader, oavsett stil. (Less)

The majority of laymen seem to prefer the aesthetics of, what might be referred to as period or traditional houses, to what we build today. The issue is being much discussed in the media, but in general, the discussions are not constructive. People that advocate a traditional architecture excoriate architects and architects treat the critics scornfully. In response to this observation, this degree project is about trying to understand what differs between the two groups and finding out if there is a way to design building façades that people in general find appealing. In response to this observation, this degree project is about trying to understand what differs between the two groups and finding out if there is a way to design building façades that people in general find appealing. Inspired by literature on classical architecture, mathematics, science and environmental psychology, I have chosen a number of concepts that might be useful to have in mind when composing façades that will be appealing to the public. Photographs of real façades exemplify these concepts and, combined with interviews and bipolar semantic scales, form a qualitative survey with an equal number of architects and laymen as participants. The survey showed that there is a certain type of façade that tends to appeal to both groups. It also highlights the difference in composition between modernist and traditional architecture and that architects in general seem to appreciate modernist façades more than the laymen do. The qualities that the favoured façades had in common could be a good source of inspiration or work as guidelines for future designs, regardless of style. (Less)
