Abstract
Within the last twenty years, the Swedish military has been drastically reduced in size and capability. The conscription service was discontinued which made retaining personnel difficult. The service was reinstated nine years later due to the geopolitical instability around Sweden and the national goal to double personnel by 2035. Consequently, the military must focus on retaining trained personnel.
To accomplish this goal, this small scale study aims to reveal the personal motivational factors important for military employees which keep them employed with the armed forces. To accomplish this goal, this small scale study aims to reveal the personal motivational factors important for military employees which keep them employed with the armed forces. The army installation, Southern Scanian Regiment, in southern Sweden was used to conduct this study which compared the qualitative results from a questionnaire with a similar study by Torbjörn Engelkes. The results of the present study identify three factors, among others, that are important to the workers at this installment and which are consistent with Engelkes’ previous study from 2012. The factors identified were comradery, that work tasks are meaningful and serve a purpose for the employee, as well as variation in work tasks. (Less)
