Abstract
Kofi Annans six-point peace plan in 2012 was thought to resolve the ongoing conflict in Syria, which at thas time was on the verge of civil war. Initially the outcome of the peace plan was thought to be positive, only to result in an escalation of military violence leaving Kofi Annan and his peace plan departing Syria without a successful outcome. How can this failure be explained? Using William I Zartmans Ripeness Theory as our theoretical foundation, this case study aims to answer the question: How applicable is Ripeness Theory when explaining the failure of Kofi Annnan peace plan in Syria? Using William I Zartmans Ripeness Theory as our theoretical foundation, this case study aims to answer the question: How applicable is Ripeness Theory when explaining the failure of Kofi Annnan peace plan in Syria? Ripeness Theory has had its advocates and its opponents, and by testing the theory on a critical case like Kofi Annans peace plan, we came to the conclusion that the premises for Ripeness Theory can be revised and adapted to the multilateral reality of contemporary conflicts. We came to this conclusion using a deductive method, allowing us to test our theory on empirical material, in order to let our theory, lead the way in our work. (Less)
