In 2012, a peaceful revolution was carried out by the Kurdish movement in Northern Syria which established Rojava as an autonomous region ruled by the principles of democratic confederalism. The core principles of democratic confederalism are women’s liberation, social ecology and pluralistic grassroots democracy. It is called a democracy without a state and is founded upon the theoretical work of the PKK-founder Abdullah Öcalan.
The alternative discourse of democratic confederalism is causing antagonism in the hegemony of nation-state discourse since they both are aiming to define the same phenomena: the political community. This paper analyses how these discourses are constructing the political community and what the similarities and differences are between them. (Less)
