Revitalizing Social Life of Carnide, Lisbon

Abstract
The site is at Carnide, a peripheral area at the Northern end of Lisbon. The neighborhood has its roots in the late ’50s with strong cultural traditions. Unlike other areas from Lisbon or other cities from Portugal, this area is lacking social interaction spaces. Portuguese culture very much depends on these public spaces and squares. Even the smallest town in Portugal has a square. The aim is to develop a vibrant urban environment with a clear focus on placemaking. Strategies are focused on building a coherent network in which public spaces are all connected to each other and residential environment with retail and community content, paired with space for recreation and leisure activities at ground level. To provide an integrated public space network at every scale, porous and connected to surroundings and to outline human-society relationships, the followings act as driving forces- the role of culture in shaping space, the image of the city and the role of public space in shaping interpersonal relations.
