This study seeks to examine the nationalist ideological positioning of the Swedish parliament’s only self-proclaimed nationalist party, the Sweden Democrats (SD). The understanding of nationalism differs heavily in the social sciences and a variety of distinctions have been proposed in the study of it. The most common of these distinctions is the one between civic and ethnic nationalism.
The method that has been used is textual analysis. We have constructed and designed ideal types of civic and ethnic nationalism based on characteristics prevalent in the theoretical literature. This study seeks to examine the nationalist ideological positioning of the Swedish parliament’s only self-proclaimed nationalist party, the Sweden Democrats (SD). The understanding of nationalism differs heavily in the social sciences and a variety of distinctions have been proposed in the study of it. The most common of these distinctions is the one between civic and ethnic nationalism.

By using this material, the study aims to shed light on how SD present themselves in an official context.
Our main conclusion is that the SD primarily express themselves in ethnic nationalist terms, with a few exceptions. Notably, when they express themselves in civic terms, we understand it to be in order to balance a previous ethnic statement. (Less)
