- The purpose of this study was to examine how residential care staff, comprehend and address sexuality among people with intellectual disabilities through communication and action. This study was performed with a qualitative method and seven semi-structured interviews was carried out with staff from different disability homes in Skåne. - The purpose of this study was to examine how residential care staff, comprehend and address sexuality among people with intellectual disabilities through communication and action. Earlier research regarding attitudes and how sexuality is viewed from care staff among people with intellectual disabilities sexuality is limited in a Swedish context, although research has increased the last decade. Earlier scientific studies have shown that care staff are mostly positive towards sexuality among people with intellectual disabilities who lives at disability homes. Even though the view is increasingly more positive, studies has shown that care staff feel responsibility towards people with intellectual disabilities sexual behavior and need to practice control measures. Our study has found that the attitudes and how sexuality is viewed regarding sexuality among people with intellectual disabilities has started to shift within the organizations. Furthermore, we found dissonance within how care staff´s comprehend sexuality among people with intellectual disabilities and how they address it through communication and actions. The study also showed that the care staff feel responsibility towards how the sexuality is expressed and encourage it to be explored in a safe and respectful manner according to society’s norms and expectation.
