- The tasks of a social worker often require the abilities of both the understanding of one’s own as well as the client’s emotions. Meanwhile many studies show that men are emotionally restricted and have difficulties handling emotions. The purpose of the study was to explore the emotional history of men who are studying to become social workers and how it might affect their future profession. Meanwhile many studies show that men are emotionally restricted and have difficulties handling emotions. The purpose of the study was to explore the emotional history of men who are studying to become social workers and how it might affect their future profession. In doing so this qualitative study has acquired empirical data using Johansson’s structure for narrative interviews to harvest long and detailed descriptions of the respondent’s emotional history. In analysing the conducted interview’s the empirical data was discussed through three theories: mainly Collins theory of (1) interaction rituals but also (2) emotion sociology and (3) masculinity norms. The results suggest that the students express and manage emotions surprisingly well despite that the majority have experienced difficulties in expressing emotions in their youth. This due to the norms of being a man and negative interaction rituals. Throughout the stories of the respondents it becomes clear that the interactions of the past play a significant factor in their ability to handle and express emotions in the present. The results of the analysis also suggest that it is mainly through their positive interaction rituals that the desire to help people and furthermore engage in the profession as a social worker is born.
