Abstract
This study investigates the causal effect of environmental attitudes on number of children one has. The aim is to contribute to the recent discussion on reducing carbon emissions by having fewer children. Using data from the World Values Survey Association, an instrumental variables approach was used to analyse the research question. Moreover, a factor analysis was conducted in order to create a variable capturing attitudes towards the environment. By instrumenting this variable with a drought in Spain and Morocco, an estimate for the weighted average of covariate-specific local average treatment effect is obtained. This study suggests that people do in fact have less children if more concerned about the environment.
