In fact women are both capable and willing to make their own decisions to join. Behind these decisions are a number of motivational factors that governements and organizations need to have knowledge about in order to be able to create policies to prevent women from joining terrorist groups. Using a normtheoretical perspective in a qualitatative documentary analysis, this essay finds out what the primary social motivational factors are and the joining women´s relation to the social norms in their society when it comes to joining a terrorist group. The essay also looks at a new Swedish bill concerning criminalization of participation in a terrorist group. By using legal norms and social motivational factors the essay discusses how the motivation for women, who have once joined or wants to join a terrorist group, could be affected. The Swedish legal council does not agree with the bill as it is written today, instead they suggest that it contradicts the Swedish constitution. Furthermore, the definition of the term ”participation” needs to be more specific in a legislation than it is in the bill. (Less)
