Abstract
In order to be able to fold packaging material into good looking packages with
maintained barrier properties, the material is first provided with folding
indications. This process is called creasing and it is carried out by passing the
paperboard between two rollers holding tools which create a permanent
deformation in the paperboard, according to a predetermined pattern.

These tools have looked the same since the 1970’s, which means that they risk
causing a bottleneck-effect if they do not follow the development of other

These tools have looked the same since the 1970’s, which means that they risk
causing a bottleneck-effect if they do not follow the development of other
components of the converting process. Because of the design of the equipment, the
whole module that the rollers are mounted onto is changed, instead of only
changing the tools. This means that each factory needs to keep several modules in
storage.

The possibility to mount several types of tools onto one roller has been exploredthrough modelling in Creo, after considering the conditions regarding mounting. The purpose was to increase flexibility and save module storage costs.

The result of the modeling showed that the gain of mounting several plates onto
one roller would be small. Since the hole patterns for mounting different tools
interfere with each other, it is impossible to mount more than two or three types of tools on the same roller. This means that a large number of rollers and modules are still needed, while the tool changes are still time consuming.

A new system for flexible changes will likely be necessary in the future. A few
suggestions for ideas to base this on have been developed, for instance to design
the tools differently in order to reduce the number of screw holes. To redesign the packages instead, in order to facilitate a new system for creasing tools has also been discussed, even though it would be expensive to implement. (Less)
