Forest Reaction to the 2018 Drought : comparing the Hyltemossa and Rumperöd Forests

- Abstract
- This paper analyzes the reactions of two forests, located in the same region, to drought conditions that occurred in 2018. Both locations experienced similar conditions including higher temperature and less precipitation than the previous four years. Both experienced drought that would be categorized as moderate according to standard precipitation index calculations and soil moisture values were very similar. It was found that both forests reacted very differently despite these similarities, with the Hyltemossa location experiencing a more severe decrease in net ecosystem exchange and variations in ecosystem respiration and gross primary production. It was found that both forests reacted very differently despite these similarities, with the Hyltemossa location experiencing a more severe decrease in net ecosystem exchange and variations in ecosystem respiration and gross primary production. Possible reasons put forward for this difference include crowding, diversity, and canopy protection attributed to the different management techniques used in each forest (clear-cutting in Hyltemossa and continuous cover forestry in Rumperöd). Due to the complexity of interactions within the ecosystem, it is not possible to definitively state a leading cause for this difference in response. Other variables such as vapor pressure deficit, evapotranspiration, water retention curves, and topography of the sites should be evaluated in the future in order to get a broader understanding of the reaction to drought and similarities or differences between sites.
