Abstract
In Peru, the decision of pursuing higher education for boys and girls is dependent on one’s family. Especially in rural areas, the inequalities are high and girls are far less likely than boys to attend post-secondary education. Therefore, this study explored how parental support in relation to one’s daughter’s post-secondary education is influenced by three variables, based on the social cognitive career theory: "academic competence belief” (i.e. self-efficacy), “outcome expectations” (i.e. goal fulfillment), and “contextual influences” (i.e. contextual influences). The data was collected with a survey, via a convenience sample in Cusco. The participants (N = 68) were parents with daughters pursuing post-secondary education and... (More)

The data was collected with a survey, via a convenience sample in Cusco. The participants (N = 68) were parents with daughters pursuing post-secondary education and participants of the Peruvian Hearts organization (group 1), and parents whose daughters attended an upper secondary school (group 2). A multiple standard regression, with parental support as the dependent variable, and an independent sample t-test was performed. The results showed a significant impact of academic competence belief, and that the three variables explained 39.5% of the variance in the support variable. A significant difference was also found on the outcome expectations variable, where participants in group 1 rated higher. The conclusion drawn was that academic competence belief was the number one predictor of parental support, and that families with daughters in post-secondary education and with support from an organization, tend to perceive more positive outcome expectations in relation to one’s daughter’s higher education pursuit. Abstract (Swedish)
(More)
