- Abstract
- The following paper examines the philosopher and art-critic Arthur Danto’s well-known thesis concerning ”the end of art” in relation to its influences and contemporary historical context. Inspired by Hegel’s philosophy of history and art, Danto’s argument was based on the idea that Western art history, construed as a grand narrative, had come to an end in the second half of the twentieth century. During the pop art movement, artists like Andy Warhol demonstrated that apparently trivial, mass-produced objects were capable of constituting artworks. - The following paper examines the philosopher and art-critic Arthur Danto’s well-known thesis concerning ”the end of art” in relation to its influences and contemporary historical context. Inspired by Hegel’s philosophy of history and art, Danto’s argument was based on the idea that Western art history, construed as a grand narrative, had come to an end in the second half of the twentieth century. During the pop art movement, artists like Andy Warhol demonstrated that apparently trivial, mass-produced objects were capable of constituting artworks. Danto’s realization that after the 1960s everything was capable of constituting a work of art led him to declare that the history of art had come to an end. Art would no longer be connected to history in the way that it had been before. Danto initially formulated his thesis in an article published in 1984, and continued to argue for it until his death in 2013. During the time that Danto published his text, the intellectual movement postmodernism had a significant influence on the academy as well as on society. This essay will thus examine how Danto formulated his argument and how it related to contemporary intellectual discussions, ongoing debates concerning the theory and history of art, as well as an older philosophical tradition.
